Drawings

This page is dedicated to the drawings that I’ve produced for the past few years. It’s an ongoing portfolio, but to start, I’m adding images from my experiences in all the VERNADOC camps that I’ve participated in. For those unfamiliar with VERNADOC, it’s an international workshop where participants get together for two weeks to document vernacular architecture and built heritage from all around the world. The drawings shown here are the final results of the two weeks workshop (or camp as we call it in VERNADOC). I’m the co-founder for the Malaysian chapter and have organized 3 of these camps since 2017 and looking forward to many more. For additional information, embedded below is a PechaKucha video which I presented in October 2020 as part of the World Architecture Festival held in Singapore.

VERNADOC Malaysia 2018 - Sungai Buloh: My second camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was the drawing for the Rehabilitation Center in the former leprosy settlement in Malaysia.

VERNADOC Bangkok 2018: My fourth camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was the historic Old Custom House in Bangkok and it was truly an honor to be there to document this magnificent building.

VERNADOC Italy 2019 - Monteprandone: My sixth camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was held in the eastern part of the Italian peninsula, and probably one of my most memorable camp. Not only was it held in January (a cold winter) but it was also in Italy.

VERNADOC China 2019 - PingYao: My eighth camp and drawing for VERNADOC. Our location for this camp is located in the northern part of China, in the ShanXi region. PingYao is a well-preserved ancient walled city. It’s also listed under the UNESCO heritage site. It was truly an amazing trip just to see the examples of Han architecture.

VERNADOC Malaysia - Taiping 2020: My tenth camp for VERNADOC. This camp was in collaboration with UCSI University School of Architecture, Building and Environment. Located in Taiping and built around the early 1880s, we were documenting one of the oldest functioning wet market in Malaysia. This drawing was one of the addition of the market, currently being used as the food centre. The structure is built entirely out of timber, a rare sight in Malaysia.

VERNADOC Phuket 2017 - My first camp and first drawing for VERNADOC. This is a 1:10 scale of the front gable of a house in Phuket Old Town.

VERNADOC Bali 2018 - Pinggan: My third camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was a village in the north-east area of Bali. Most of the houses in this compound was built entirely from bamboo before they were replaced by modern and cheaper materials.

VERNADOC Malaysia 2018 - Kluang, Johor: My fifth camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was out Malaysia’s second camp and it was an extremely intimate one, with only 7 of us from Thailand and Malaysia.

VERNADOC Bali 2019 - Desa Pedawa: My seventh camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was also my second time participating in the Bali camp. This time around, we were documenting a compound in the northern part of Bali, in Desa Pedawa. The closest town would be Singaraja. Shown here is an elevated rice barn.

VERNADOC Cambodia 2019: My ninth camp and drawing for VERNADOC. This was also Cambodia’s first camp and my first time in Phnom Penh. The site is located in the outskirts of Phnom Penh and inside this ancient temple are walls of magnificent murals paintings.
